In Democracy, Decisions Must Be Made By Consensus, Not Threats: Akhilesh Yadav On The Move To Amend Article 370

"All parties should be part of talks and due process."

The Bharatiya Janata Party government’s move to abrogate Article 370 has received both criticism and support from various political parties. A particular point that has received the most criticism is how the step was executed.

Communications in Jammu and Kashmir were and continue to be blocked. The subjects of the state — now Union Territory — have had no internet (broadband or cellular) and no telephonic connectivity. There is a curfew there, and major political leaders there had been and continue to be detained. To change the fate of an entire region sans their consent, or even an opportunity to speak, has been called out.

Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav has been one of the many leaders to criticise this. Taking to Twitter, Yadav wrote, “Any move that seeks to strengthen the integrity of India is to be welcomed. But in a democracy, decisions must be made by consensus, not by threat, force or fear.”

Yadav added, “All parties should be part of talks and due process. Nothing should be unilateral for that only leads to more strife.”
