Mainstream Media Silent ‘Because of Greed’: Arun Shourie
He also said that the attacks on freedom of speech were centrally directed and implemented at all levels.
Veteran journalist and politician Arun Shourie reportedly said, on January 12, that the silence of the mainstream media was “because of greed”. Shourie was speaking at the inauguration of The Hindu Lit for Life festival, a three-day event in Chennai.
According to The Hindu, Shourie said, “The mainstream media is silent, not so much because of legitimate fear but because of greed. The institutions that could provide protection are so compromised and weakened.”
Criticising the government’s opposing actions against the fundamental right to freedom and expression, Shourie observed, “Never have we had as pervasive…as brazen…as systematic…and as prolonged an attack on ideas or freedom, and on institutions. It is centrally directed and it is implemented at all levels.”
Shourie also commented on the rising intolerance in the country. “… Persons have been killed, prosecuted and cases have been filed for what they have written or their views,” said Shourie, who added that lit fests were one arena where people could exercise their freedom of speech, without being stifled.
