BJP MLA Ashok Singh Chandel Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for The Murder of 5 People
Chandel is a BJP MLA from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh. He had contested the election from jail.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Hamirpur, Uttar Pradesh, Ashok Singh Chandel and 10 others were sentenced to life imprisonment by the Allahabad high court, on Friday, for the 1997 murder of five people.
Twenty-two years ago, three members from Rajiv Shukla’s family along with two others were murdered in broad daylight in public. The victims were Rajiv Shukla’s elder brother Rajesh Shukla, Rakesh Shukla, Rakesh’s son Ganesh Shukla and Ved Prakash Nayak and Shrikant Pandey. The latter two were the family’s security guards.
Eleven people including Chandel and his personal gunner Rukku were named in the murder case. Chandel was imprisoned for a long time due to the case. He even contested the election from inside the jail and had won.
Earlier, a lower court had cleared Chandel and all the accused of all charges. Rajiv Shukla had then appealed in the Allahabad high court. Rukku was at large during the whole time.
In view of the new circumstances, the Allahabad High court convicted Ashok Singh Chandel and all the others accused of committing the murders.
Others convicted include— Raghuvir Singh, Ashutosh Singh (alias Dabbu), Sahab Singh, Maan Singh, Pradip Singh, Uttam Singh, Shyam Singh.
