‘Excessive, Disproportionate and Unjustified’: Bar Association of India Condemns CBI Action Against Indira Jaising, Anand Grover

The BAI said that the CBI action amounted to "an assault on the independence of lawyers engaged in constitutionally protected activities of advancing human rights..."

The Bar Association of India (BAI) on Monday, July 15 condemned the CBI action against human rights advocates Indira Jaising and Anand Grover.

“The BAI condemns the excessive, disproportionate and unjustified action, which amounts to an assault on the independence of lawyers engaged in constitutionally protected activities of advancing human rights and upholding the rule of law,” the statement said, reported NDTV.

The BAI also said that the CBI action amounts to, “an assault on the independence of lawyers engaged in constitutionally protected activities of advancing human rights and upholding the rule of law.”

The raids were carried out on July 11 in relation to a case of alleged Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) violation. The CBI had filed an against FIR against Grover and other office bearers of the NGO Lawyers Collective last month, and the Union Home Ministry had cancelled its FCRA registration.

Lawyers Collective had said that Jaising and Grover had been targeted because of the nature of the cases taken up by them, “including those against the leading figures of the ruling dispensation….”

In separate statements, Rajya Sabha MPs and civil society members had also condemned the raids as a “brute show of intimidation as well as gross abuse of power.”
