Bareilly: Four Labourers Beaten With Slippers, Belts For Allegedly Eating Meat Near Religious Place

Not a day has gone by since the victory of the BJP in the Lok Sabha Polls when incidents of hate crime have not taken place.

“What if I take pork to a masjid?” asked an individual accompanied by a group to four daily wage labourers, before showering them with expletives and beating them with slippers. What was the fault of the labourers? They were allegedly having meat near a religious place in Baheri area in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly.

As per two videos share by journalist Piyush Rai and the Twitter account Bahujan4India, the four men can be seen surrounded by a much larger group, who continue to assault them and verbally abuse them for eating meat. In the video shared by Rai, the labourers claim that they are eating okra, not meat. The assailants, however, don’t believe them.

In the video shared by Bahujan4India, one of the labourers is seen admitting after being thrashed repeatedly that it was “bade ka meat“. Upon further questioning, he said it was buffalo meat. Following this admission, the men continue to harass the victims.

Both videos have been widely shared on social media. As per an IANS report, the police said that the labourers had arrived at Baheri after being hired by a mason, and two of them belonged to a minority community.

“Four unidentified labourers had been hired for construction work at a residence. During the lunch break, they had gone to a nearby devasthan (a miniature shrine with idols of gods usually near shady trees) to take meal sitting under the tree,” Baheri station house officer Dhananjay Singh told IANS.

Bareilly Senior Superintendent of Police Muniraj G said that police have registered an FIR against Adesh Valmiki and Manish and four unknown men. Two teams have been set up to arrest the accused who are absconding.

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh took to social media to condemn the incident. He asked BJP voters to watch the video, warning them that soon they too might get attacked for eating non-vegetarian food.

Not a day has gone by since the victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha Polls on May 23, when incidents of hate crime have not taken place. This too is a glaring example of utter lawlessness.
