BIG: EC Orders Re-Polling At 168 Tripura West Polling Stations

This is the highest number of re-polling for any Lok Sabha constituency in the ongoing elections.

The election commission (EC) on May 7, ordered that fresh polls be conducted at 168 polling stations in Tripura West parliamentary constituency on May 12, and declared the polls conducted earlier on April 11 as void. The state has two Lok Sabha seats: Tripura West and Tripura East. Tripura West has 1,679 polling stations.

This is the highest number of re-polling for any Lok Sabha constituency in the ongoing elections.

The April 11 polls were declared as cancelled based on reports by the chief election officer, special observer, general observers and the returning officer.

Ex-IAS officer and Tripura Special Observer Vinod Zutshi had recommended repolling in 131 polling stations, on the ground that the “poll process was vitiated”.

Earlier, Tripura Congress had alleged that the EC was under political pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The party also warned that it would move the Supreme Court if re-polling is not held in at least 850 polling stations.

“We have got information that PM Modi and ruling BJP is trying to influence the ECI and pressuring the poll body to ensure repolls in as few polling stations as possible. If the ECI failed to perform its duties under pressure by the Prime Minister, we shall move the Supreme Court seeking legal recourse”, state Congress vice president Pijush Kanti Biswas had told The Indian Express.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), too, had staged demonstrations in Agartala and Delhi on April 16 to demand re-polling.
