Bihar: Depressed Due to Unemployment, 25-Year-Old Commits Suicide
Neel Mani Kumar had recently returned home after six months during which, he had tried but could not find a job.
Twenty-five-year-old Neel Mani Kumar hanged himself to death in Madhubani district, Bihar on Monday, February 4. Kumar was depressed due to prolonged unemployment, Urdu daily Qaumi Tanzeem reported.
Kumar had recently returned home after spending six months away looking for a job. On Monday morning, his body was found hanging from a mango tree in a garden. The local police reached the spot, however, his relatives did not allow the officials to take his body for postmortem and cremated him.
Unemployment has emerged as the most serious issue in the country today. Last year, four youths in Rajasthan’s Alwar had jumped in front of a passing train, citing no hope of getting employment. Three had died on the spot while one was seriously injured.
The recently-leaked National Sample Survey Organisation’s (NSSO) periodic labour force survey shows that the unemployment rate in the country increased to a forty-five-year high of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18. The survey data, accessed by Business Standard, highlights that for the July 2017-June 2018 period, unemployment was the highest since 1972-1973.
