West Bengal: BJP Diamond Harbour Candidate Charged Under POSCO for Sexually Assaulting 17-year-old Girl
West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has written to the election commission to immediately arrest Roy.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Diamond Harbour candidate Nilanjan Roy has been charged under the POSCO Act for allegedly sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl last month.
Rica Roy reporting for NDTV wrote that the incident allegedly took place on April 26, when the child along with her father had gone to complain to Roy about the misbehaviour of some of his party workers. A police complaint was filed the next day.
Ananya Chatterjee Chakrobarti, the chairperson of West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBPCR) told NDTV, “A complaint was lodged at the Falta police station. Medical examination of the girl was done and her statement recorded, but the police did not arrest Roy.”
Chakrobarti and her colleagues reportedly visited the child at her house.
As per reports, the WBPCR came to know about the incident on May 10 and wrote to the Election Commission (EC) to immediately arrest Roy. The EC, however, is yet to take a decision on the matter.
An official at the Chief Electoral Officer’s office told PTI, “We have received a communication from the WBCPCR and are looking into it. We have sought the police report in the case and will take the necessary step as per law.”
Roy told PTI, “It’s (the complaint) absolutely a fabricated one. There is political conspiracy behind this by Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Mamata Banerjee. There is no truth in it.”
The BJP is supporting still its candidate. The party’s state vice-president Jayprakash Majumdar told NDTV that it was a conspiracy to defame Roy ahead of the elections. “It was a false case filed in a police station where he was not present during the time of the incident. On primary investigation, police did not find a prima-facie case so they did not proceed. Now the TMC is using the Child Rights Commission, who has sent a letter to the EC to arrest him, which is beyond their jurisdiction,” Majumdar said.
Diamond Harbour Superintendent of Police Srihari Pandey told NDTV that the matter was a part of the ongoing investigation. He added that the police will comply with the steps that the WBPCR had asked them to take.
Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency votes on May 19. Roy is contesting against Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee and CPI(M) candidate Dr Fuad Halim.
