Boom Boom BJP Forgets To Build Bunkers for Border Villagers
We are being treated like cannon fodder, say villagers
The BJP government at the Centre and the PDP-BJP government in Jammu & Kashmir have forced people living in border villages to construct bunkers on their own despite there being a government scheme to construct over 14,000 individual and community bunkers for people living along the LoC.
A Tribune report, published on April 10, has exposed the truth about the BJP government’s lack of urgency in the matter.
“As the Central and the state governments have pushed the construction of bunkers in border belts on the backburner citing various reasons, the border inhabitants here have started constructing bunkers on their own ‘to save their families from firing and shells’,” the April 10 report states. “They have a reason to be worried because neither the Centre nor the state government has taken any step to ensure their safety. Realising that the governments had been using them as ‘cannon fodders’ for political gains, the border dwellers are left with no option but to construct bunkers on their own.”
The Centre sanctioned the construction of 14,460 individual and community bunkers for people living along the Line of Control and International Border but there has been no sign of construction so far.
The state-owned National Buildings Construction Corporation (NBCC) were to build these bunkers in areas that lie within 3 kilometres from the border and are first in line of sight from International Border or Line of Control. While each individual bunker of 160 sq feet will be enough to accommodate 8-10 persons, every community bunker can provide shelter to about 40 persons.
Meanwhile villagers are complaining that the BJP has turned them into cannon fodder.
“We are the victims of the unfulfilled promises of the governments — both at New Delhi and J&K. We have reasons to get worried about our families,” The Tribune quoted a villager as saying. “For the last four years, we have been listening to the promises of politicians to construct bunkers for the border residents, but nothing has been done so far. That is why I have started constructing the bunker on my own to shield my family from cross-border firing.”
