Protest Outside CBI Office: Congress President Rahul Gandhi Courts Arrest

"Nothing will deter us in our quest to speak truth to power and exposing Modi Govt’s corruption," Surjewala said.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi and other senior party leaders were detained by the Delhi Police on Friday, while protesting outside Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Headquarter here.

Sharing pictures of Gandhi inside the Lodhi Road police station, party spokesperson Rajdeep Surjewala said, “Nothing will deter us in our quest to speak truth to power and exposing Modi Govt’s corruption.”

In Lucknow, Congress workers led by state Congress committee president Raj Babbar, were also taken into custody by state police.

Congress workers led by Gandhi took to the streets against the Centre’s decision to divest CBI Director Alok Verma of his powers and send him on leave. The protestors demand reinstatement of Verma and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress, which marched from Dayal Singh College on Lodhi Road to the CBI headquarters about a kilometre away, termed the move against Verma “illegal and unconstitutional” because as per the official rules, only a committee comprising of the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the Leader of Opposition can remove the CBI Director.

The Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, in the wee hours of Wednesday, sent Verma on leave. It is believed that Verma collected strong evidence against top bureaucrats in the PMO and was about to begin investigation in the Rafale Scam, which allegedly led to his panicked removal by the PM.
