Chhattisgarh: Congress Leader Bhupesh Baghel Reaffirms Poll Promise to Waive Farmers’ Loans Within 10 Days

Baghel said, “All loans taken up to October 31 will be waived within 10 days after Congress forms the government in the state.”

Bhupesh Baghel, the Chhattisgarh state Congress president, reiterated the party’s election promise that farmers’ loans would be waived within 10 days if the party won the assembly elections. Baghel was speaking in Raipur on Thursday, November 22.

Baghel reportedly said, “All loans taken up to October 31 will be waived within 10 days after Congress forms the government in the state.” He added, “The farmers can sell the rice, it will help them. The Congress will buy the rice at Rs 2,500 (minimum support price); the difference in the sum thereafter, the farmers will receive it as bonus.”

Earlier, Scroll had reported that farmers in the state had not sold paddy as they were hoping for a loan waiver. Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who had been campaigning in the state ahead of the second phase of the election in the state, had said on Tuesday, November 20, “As soon as the Congress forms the government here, Modiji, you count 10 days. The Congress will waive the loans of each farmer in Chhattisgarh within 10 days.”

The Congress, in its manifesto, has focused on the farmers’ struggles under the long–standing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule — both in Chhattisgarh and in Madhya Pradesh. On Wednesday, November 21, through its official Chhattisgarh Congress Twitter handle, the Congress slammed the BJP and said, “Whenever the BJP feels that it is about to lose, it resorts to ‘lying, shouting and repeatedly lying’. The governments of Punjab and Karnataka have waived the loans of farmers, now it is the turn of farmers in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.”
