Dalit Professor Alleges Harassment By 4 Upper-Caste Colleagues At IIT-Kharagpur
National Commission for Scheduled Caste has sought a report on the complaint by May 1.
A Dalit professor of IIT-Kharagpur has accused four of his senior colleagues, all upper caste men, of caste-based harassment. The administration has said it will lodge an FIR against the four senior professors for allegedly harassing the Dalit faculty member. The decision came after the issue was raised with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC).
The Times of India reported that the Dalit professor joined the faculty of aerospace engineering in January this year. NCSC has sought the removal of a senior faculty member from the board of governors and the institution’s liaison officer at the SC/ST cell for his ‘soft’ approach towards the accused. The commission has sought a report on this by May 1.
The professor had earlier sent an email to the director complaining about the professors’ misbehavior towards him.
IIT-K director Manindra Agarwal has not offered more details but said that appropriate steps would be taken. The professors have not been suspended yet although it is being speculated that the NCSC has made the demand. Agarwal refused to authenticate the claim.
