Did Election Commission Push Announcement Of Election Dates To Favour PM Modi’s Rally?
EC’s independence is being called into question by many including the opposition.
The Election Commission of India (EC) delayed the announcement of election dates by over 3 hours at the last minute on Saturday.
In a press release Saturday morning, EC notified that it will hold a press conference at 12:30 pm to announce the dates of the assembly elections in four states — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram.
However, a later release informed that the announcement will now be made at 3.30 pm.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing a rally in Rajasthan’s Ajmer at 1 PM today to mark the conclusion of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje’s state-wide yatra ahead of assembly elections in the state.
Notably, once the poll dates are announced, the model code of conduct comes into effect barring political parties from making any policy announcements. If the announcement would have been made at 12:30, PM Modi’s rally would have been affected.
Election Commission of India is a statutory body. As a result of today’s events, its independence is being called into question by many including the opposition.
