Father of Wing Commander Abhinandan Does Not Wish the Media Contact Him

Pakistani forces captured the IAF pilot following engagement between Indian and Pak fighters along the LoC.

Retired Air Marshal S Varthaman, the father of an Indian Air Force pilot who has been captured by Pakistan following the skirmish between IAF and the Pakistani Air Force, has reportedly requested that the media not to contact him.

The Lede reported that Varthaman did not want to speak about the capture of his son Wing Commander Abhinandan. The report added that the gates to his Chennai residential neighbourhood were shut after this encounter.

The Lede also issued an apology tweet for having erroneously identified the residential colony of the retired Air Marshal in a previous tweet that they have now deleted.

Pakistani forces, on February 27, detained Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman following a fierce engagement between air forces of the two sides along the Line of Control in which a Pakistani jet was downed. IAF also lost a MiG-21 jet in the engagement. “It was made clear that Pakistan would be well advised to ensure that no harm comes to the Indian defence personnel in its custody. India also expects his immediate and safe return,” the MEA said.

Multiple videos of the IAF officer have been circulating on the internet, some that show him getting thrashed by an angry crowd and one that shows him calmly responding to interrogation by the Pakistani forces.
