Father Of Woman Allegedly Raped By BJP MLA Dies In UP Police Custody
Allegedly thrashed by MLA and supporters, the man was arrested before he was admitted to hospital.
Lucknow: A man, whose daughter tried to immolate herself outside the UP CM’s residence on Sunday, has died in police custody at the Unnao district hospital, media reports claimed on Monday morning.
His 18-year-old daughter had alleged BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar and his accomplices raped her last year and that the UP police was refusing to take action against the politician.
The man had suffered multiple injuries after he was roughed up a few days ago, Times of India claims, allegedly by the accused MLA’s brother and accomplices.
He was subsequently arrested after a clash between his family and Sengar’s supporters on April 2. He was taken to the hospital from jail and succumbed to injuries on early Monday morning.
Sengar, meanwhile, denied the allegation and said that he did not know about how her father had died. “It’s a false charge. I don’t know how her father died. Allegations against me are baseless,” News18 quoted Sengar as saying on Monday.
The woman had alleged that she was raped in June last year by Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the MLA of Unnao district’s Bangermau constituency, around 90 km from Lucknow. She also accused the Unnao police of not taking any action and registering a case on her complaint, Vijay Sen Singh, in-charge of the Gautampalli police station, said.
But Sengar denied the allegations, saying it was conspiracy to malign his image.
“It is a conspiracy hatched by my political opponents to tarnish my image and damage my reputation… I have no problems with any probe. Let a probe be conducted, and the guilty be given the stringent punishment. If I am found guilty in the probe, I am ready to face the punishment,” the BJP MLA told PTI.
The immolation bid took place outside the Golf Club gate of the chief minister’s residence here. However, the police foiled it, Singh said.
The woman was made to appear before Rajiv Krishan, the Additional Director-General of Police, Lucknow, who has ordered a probe, the inspector said.
No case has been registered yet, he added.
