For God’s Sake, Forget Bullet Train. First Make Existing Trains Function: Senior BJP Leader Slams PM Modi and Piyush Goyal

Laxmi Kanta Chawla said that instead of a special coach, Goyal should travel on a train like common people and see how they suffer.

Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former minister of health in the Punjab state cabinet, Laxmi Kanta Chawla slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal for failing to improve the conditions of existing trains.

Chawla’s scathing remarks were recorded when she was travelling on-board the Saryu-Yamuna Express. She said the train used to be known as the ‘flying mail’ but today, “We have been sitting in this train for twenty four plus eight hours. And this train is running 9 hours late.”

She adds, “I have only one appeal from the Indian government and Modiji, please have some mercy on the common people. Existing trains in the country are in a dilapidated condition — latrines are broken, seats are broken.” She said that she was travelling in an AC Three Tier coach and was facing much distress. “The train’s route was changed but nobody informed us why the train is late or when it will start moving. And if, on a train that has no food services, passengers have to spend ten extra hours, what will happen to them?”

Not mincing any words, Chawla said, “For God’s sake, forget the bullet train. Forget the train that runs at 120 or 200 kilometres per hour. First, make the existing trains function.”

“Due to lack of waiting rooms, people are forced to wait on footpaths and platforms during the winter, nobody cares about them Piyush Goyal ji, Modiji.”

She had some more advice for the union minister who travels in a special coach. “Instead of your special coach, try travelling on a train like common people and see the how they suffer.”

“I am very disappointed travelling on these trains of the Indian Railways. The conditions of Shatabdi (Express) and Rajdhani (Express) have been improved, these are the trains for the rich. What are you doing about the trains that labourers, farmers and soldiers are travelling on?,” added Chawla.

She criticised how the food stalls were shut down at the Old Delhi Railway Station and even water was hard to find on the platforms. She also spoke about corrupt practices of the ticket checkers, saying she had complained about one TC on the train that had taken Rs 4,500 from three passengers. She said the complaint must have reached you (Piyush Goyal), it has appeared in the newspapers today. “If there is anyone who wants to pay attention, please do, otherwise here it is Andher Nagri Chaupat Raja…”
