Gujarat: BJP MLA Thrashes NCP Leader Nitu Tejwani; Says ‘Got Swayed by Emotions’ (Video)

Tejwani had gone to meet Balram Thawani to discuss water-related issues when he assaulted her.

After a video went viral on Sunday, Naroda’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Balram Thawani on Monday accepted that he had thrashed Nationalist Congress Party leader Nitu Tejwani. Tejwani claimed that she went to the MLA’s house to discuss local issues when the incident took place.

In the video, the Gujarat leader can be seen repeatedly kicking the NCP ward in-charge while she fell on the ground. The MLA’s aides also beat up the woman along with him.

Tejwani was taken to a hospital for treatment. She said that her husband Rajesh Tejwani was also thrashed by the MLA’s supporters. As per a PTI report, a few days ago, Nitu Tejwani had approached the BJP MLA’s brother, Kishore Thawani, who is a local corporator, with the request to not disconnect the water supply of her locality in Naroda town as the legal process to restore it was underway. She claimed the corporator had abused and hit her.

Tejwani said when no action was taken even after four-five days, she went to the MLA’s office in Meghani Nagar area of Ahmedabad city, along with other women of her locality.

“The MLA was not in the office. But his supporters started abusing me,” she said.

“We shouted slogans against Kishore Thawani. Soon, Balram bhai arrived in a vehicle, came out, snatched the mobile phone from my hand and slapped me very hard. I fell down, after which he started kicking me. They hit me with a stick,” she said.

“He kicked me in the stomach and put his boots on my face. There were six-seven more people. When my husband tried to stop him, his men came out from the office and started thrashing my husband,” she added.

Speaking to ANI, Thawani said, “I got swayed by emotions, I accept the mistake, it was not intentional. I have been in politics for the last 22 years, such a thing has never happened before. I will say sorry to her.”

The Congress, meanwhile, sought action against the MLA and demanded an apology from the BJP and Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. “Even 12 hours after the video went viral, the chief minister and the police are silent,” Congress state president Amit Chavda said. NCP leader Jayant Bosky too demanded the suspension of the MLA from the Assembly as well as his expulsion from the BJP. “We have talked to the woman who is associated with the NCP… We will appeal, protest and fight against this,” Bosky said.

A probe based on complaints filed by both sides was underway, Deputy Commissioner of Police Neeraj Badgujar said. “Both the sides have lodged a complaint of rioting and assault, and police are investigating the case,” Badgujar said.

Meanwhile, Thawani asserted that Tejwani was like his “sister” and he had “apologised” to her. The NCP leader also told media persons that they have mutually resolved the issue. “Unhone bola main tujhe behn maan ke chala hoon, aur behn ki tarah hi maine tujhe thapad mara tha aur mera koi galat vichaar nahi tha. Maine unko bhaisaab maan liya hai, samadhan sabne mil kar kiya hai (He said I consider you like my sister, and I slapped you in that manner only, I had no wrong intention. I also consider him like my brother now. We have mutually resolved the issue),” Tejwani said.
