If Justice Ranjan Gogoi is not made the next CJI, it will only prove that what we said at press conference is true: Justice Chelameswar

Five quotes from senior-most Supreme Court judge, Justice Jasti Chelameswar

Justice Jasti Chelameswar, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, spoke with journalist Karan Thapar on the “Role of judiciary in democracy” at an event organised by the Harvard Club of India in New Delhi on Saturday. He was among the four senior-most judges of the top court who had written a letter to Chief Justice of India, Deepak Misra and released the letter in a press conference in January.

Here are the top-five quotes from Justice Chelameswar at the event:

  1. On fears that Justice Ranjan Gogoi will not be made the Chief Justice of India by the government after current Chief Justice retires in October: “I hope it will not happen. If it happens, it will only prove that what we said at the press conference is true.”

  1. On there being sufficient grounds for impeachment of the current Chief Justice of India: “I don’t know why this nation is worried about impeachment so much. Impeachment can’t be the answer for every question or every problem. We need to correct the system. In fact, we (along with Justice Ranjan Gogoi) wrote in the judgement of Justice C S Karnan that apart from that there must be mechanisms to put the system in order.

  1. On the letter by four senior-most judges to CJI and press conference: “That was the last resort. It was certainly anguish, and I felt I had no other option.

  1. On it being improper for four senior-most judges to hold the press conference: “When you are a public servant, you cannot avoid criticism. But we four judges did not feel we were violating any principles in holding the press conference.

  1. On government not taking any action on the elevation of Justice KM Joseph to Supreme Court, despite a recommendation by the Collegium: “If the Government feels that a person is a threat to national security, it should be supported by reasons. On Justice Joseph and Indu Malhotra, Government has not said anything so far.”
