In 2 years, Farmers Covered Under Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana Down By 85 Lakh
PM Modi's crop insurance scheme was launched to benefit maximum farmers.
The number of beneficiaries under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s crop insurance scheme, Prime Minister Fasal Bima Yojana’ (PMFBY), reduced by about 85 lakh farmers in the last two years.
According to reports, the number of farmers covered under PM’s flagship scheme, in 2016-17, were around 5.72 crore. This dropped to 4.87 crore in the next financial year 2017-18.
An agriculture expert told New Indian Express, “There are many issues. Delay in getting claims or compensation and getting paltry claims are some of the main reasons. There have been many instances farmers are not getting adequate claims on time.
There have been many cases wherein farmers have got compensation like Rs 4 or Rs 10 or amount like that. I don’t understand this. How this could be possible. This looks like a scam and the government needs to take some corrective measures.”
PMFBY was launched in 2016 to provide ‘maximum relief to maximum number of farmers’ through crop insurance.
