Inaction by Editors Guild, MJ Akbar’s Name in Updated Members List
The Guild has also not commented on allegations of sexual harassment against India Today anchor Gaurav Sawant.
The Editors Guild of India announced its list of updated members on Friday, November 16. The office bearers include Shekhar Gupta (President), AK Bhattacharya (Secretary) and Sheela Bhatt (Treasurer). The list also includes the new executive committee members who were appointed on August 29.
Noticeably, former MoS, External Affairs MJ Akbar, who has been accused of sexual misconduct by at least 20 journalists, is still a member of the Guild — a questionable decision given how the Guild had condemned Akbar in a statement on November 2.
The Guild had acknowledged that even though Akbar’s membership has been dormant on account of him profession shift — from journalism to politics — it would take a decision on the continuity of his membership once due processes were completed .
Akbar was forced to resign from his post of junior External Affairs Minister in October in the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government after multiple allegations of sexual misconduct — including that of rape by Pallavi Gogoi — that had prompted the Guild to issue a statement in the matter.
Additionally, while the Guild continues to maintain status quo on Akbar’s membership, it has also held its silence in the wake of sexual harassment allegations made against India Today primetime anchor Gaurav Sawant by journalist Vidya Krishnan.
