Darkest Day In Indian Democracy: Former J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti Calls Decision To Scrap Article 370 Illegal, Unconstitutional

"India has failed Kashmir in keeping its promises."

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti took to Twitter to call August 5 “the darkest day in Indian Democracy.”

She wrote: “Today marks the darkest day in Indian democracy. The decision of J&K leadership to reject two-nation theory in 1947 and align with India has backfired. Unilateral decision of GOI to scrap Article 370 is illegal and unconstitutional, which will make India an occupational force in J&K.”

In a series of tweets, Mufti added, “It will have catastrophic consequences for the subcontinent. GOIs intentions are clear. They want the territory of J&K by terrorising its people. India has failed Kashmir in keeping its promises.”

She further said, “People like us who placed faith in Parliament, the temple of democracy have been deceived. Those elements in J&K who rejected the constitution & sought resolution under the UN have been vindicated. This will exacerbate the alienation Kashmiris feel.”

Both Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were put on house arrest late on Sunday night. Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference leader Sajjad Ghani Lone too was put under house arrest. Congress leader Usman Majid and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader MY Tarigami were detained.

Addressing that, Mufti tweeted, “Already under house arrest & not allowed to have visitors either. Not sure how long I’ll be able to communicate. Is this the India we acceded to?”

On August 5, Union Home Minister Amit Shah moved a resolution in the Upper House, per which all clauses of Article 370 will not be applicable to Jammu and Kashmir. A Presidential Order removed provisions under Article 35A, which gives Jammu and Kashmir special treatment. The revocation of Article 370 came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting of Union Cabinet morning.

As per news reports, the state will be bifurcated. Ladakh will be a separate Union Territory and Jammu and Kashmir to be another. Shah proposed the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill. Jammu and Kashmir will be Union Territory with a legislature, like Delhi. Ladakh will be a Union Territory without a legislature.
