Dissenting Students and Professors Light Our Way to Future: Harsh Mander Slams Sedition Charges Against Kanhaiya Kumar and others
He said that charges against Kumar, Anand Teltumbde, Anirban Bhattacharya and Umar Khalid are an outrage.
Former IAS officer and human rights activist Harsh Mander called out the chargesheeting of student leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya in the 2016 sedition case on Wednesday, January 16. Mander also slammed the case filed against activist Dalits rights activist and scholar Anand Teltumbde for alleged link with Maoists.
Slamming the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government without naming them, Mander tweeted, “I’ve come to know & love #Anirban, #Kanhaiya & #UmarKhalid. Few love their country as much: they’re fiercely devoted to justice for India’s disadvantaged people. To charge them, & #AnandTeltumbe with sedition is an outrage. Dissenting students & profs light our way to the future.”

On Monday, January 14, the Special Cell, Delhi police’s anti-terrorism unit filed a sedition case chargesheet against Kumar— the former president of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Students’ Union— Khalid and Bhattacharya, three years after their their alleged role in raising anti-Indian slogans during their February 2016 protest against the hanging of Afzal Guru.
The timing of the chargesheet against the three has been vociferously questioned, with many terming it a pre-election stunt by the second-term seeking BJP government.
Kumar himself said that the chargesheet was “politically motivated.” Speaking to reporters, after the chargesheet was filed—at the Patialia House Court—Kumar said, “I have not received any summons or information from court. But if it is true, then we are thankful to police and (Prime Minister) Modi that finally after 3 years, when it is time for him and his government to go, the charge sheet has been filed. But what is pertinent is the timing of the charge sheet – just ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
