Law And Order Collapse: Thousands Of Migrant Workers Forced To Flee Gujarat Amid Mob Attacks
Migrant workers in various part of the state are facing attacks from local groups.
After the kidnapping and rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat, migrant workers in various part of the state are facing attacks from local groups.
According to a News18 , thousands fled Gujarat because of mob attacks against workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
15 incidents have taken place in Mehsana, 11 in Sabarkantha, 7 in Ahmedabad city, Pune Mirror. Other affected districts include Gandhinagar, Patan, Banaskantha and Aravali.
Niraj Rajbhar, who works in an industrial unit in Kalol and hails from Varanasi, Pune Mirror, “About 20 goons came last night and asked us to leave the state, threatening us with dire consequences There were about 100 migrants in our company, now only 4 are still left, the rest have gone back home.”
Many industrial units in these districts have been provided with security, since industrial units were facing attacks as well.
DGP Shivanand Jha told reporters, “Six districts have mainly been affected (by the violence), with Mehsana and Sabarkantha being the worst hit. In these districts, 42 cases have been lodged and so far we have arrested 342 accused. More arrests will be made as names of the accused come up during investigation.”
Deputy SP HD Mewada Indian Express that social media is being used to instigate mobs. “We arrested all those involved. A provocative message had been doing rounds on a social media messaging app to instigate the mob against migrant workers. These messages were based on the recent rape case in Sabarkantha and exploited the sentiment that workers from outside were taking away job opportunities. There have also been calls for a Waghodia bandh on Monday. We have strengthened security and patrolling to avoid any untoward incident.”
