Lives, Livelihoods Lost Under Modi; Youth Put into Misery: Sitaram Yechury

“This has a direct impact on India’s future. Modi’s policies are just to help rich cronies,” he added.

Citing the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) periodic labour force survey that showed how the unemployment rate in India increased to a forty-five-year high of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18, CPI(M) Secretary General  Sitaram Yechury slammed the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government on January 31.

“Youth unemployment at astoundingly high levels of 13-27 per cent. Lives, Livelihoods lost under Modi government and our most valued asset, our youth put into misery. This has a direct impact on India’s future. Modi’s policies are just to help rich cronies. For the rest, it is Jumlas,” Yechury tweeted.

Yechury added that “Modi had claimed that data is not there, but he has created an unprecedented number of jobs. The data is there, but he is scared of the truth. India has never suffered as much as under his rule. Modi’s promise was of 10 crore new jobs.”

Yechury also slammed Modi for trying to suppress data. It was reported that two members of the National Statistical Commission had even resigned citing the Modi government’s deliberate delay in publishing employment data. In a press statement, the CPI(M) said: “It is clear that the Modi government has been suppressing this information from reaching the public domain. This has resulted in two members of the National Statistical Commission, a statutory body which releases the NSSO reports, resigning. This includes the acting Chairman. This leaves just two members of the seven that the NSC is supposed to have. Earlier the Modi government refused to release the Labour Bureau’s annual survey of 2016-17.”

“This suppression of data is a clear admission on the part of the Modi government that its policies have resulted in greater misery for our people. India’s youth which is our asset is now being wasted. It also exposes the utter failure of the BJP-led government to deliver on its promise of providing two crore jobs every year i.e. ten crore new jobs during the last five years,” the statement added.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) demanded that all data must be released immediately.
