Lok Sabha Estimates Committee Hasn’t Convened in 4 Months After Members Objected to Adoption of Jobs Data Draft Report
In a scathing letter, CPI(M) MP Md. Salim has written that the govt is not allowing data on growth, employment and income to be released.
Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP and member of the Lok Sabha Committee on Estimates Md. Salim has written a scathing letter to Chairperson Murli Manohar Joshi over the “systematic suspension of the functioning” of the committee.
The committee, Salim claims, hasn’t convened since October when some members raised objections to adoption of draft report on Measurement of Growth, Employment and Income. “For more than three months the estimate committee meeting was not convened after some prominent members raised objections regarding adoption of the draft report on “Measurement of Growth, Employment and Income,” he states in the letter.
Salim’s letter, although does not name the members who opposed the adoption of the report, suggests that the same has been done in order to keep data on unemployment from coming into public domain.
As per the information available on the Lok Sabha website, on October 11, 2018, the main Committee sat to discuss adoption of draft reports. Since then, no meeting of the main Committee been listed on the issue. The last sitting on November 1, 2018 to interact with a Chinese delegation.
Salim adds, “I can imagine the pain you may have undergone seeing the concerted efforts from some quarters to block the proceedings of the meeting. Since October the proposed meeting as planned has never been convened despite repeated request. The Committee under your leadership took enough pain to study the aforesaid subjects, namely “Measurement of Growth, Employment and Income.”
The CPI(M) leader further claims that the efforts of the committee have been wasted in order to protect the Modi government which is hiding key data. “How the entire efforts and resources gone to astray to protect the government which is not allowing the facts related to so called growth, employment and income out in public. Instead the government is spending huge amount on publicity to buttress its false claims.”
