Manage BJP Netas To Avoid Encounter, UP Cop Tells Gangster
Want protection from encounters in UP? Fix BJP netas.
A taped conversation of an Uttar Pradesh police officer advising a gangster to “manage” two BJP MLAs to save himself from a ‘fixed’ encounter has come as another pointer to the rampant abuse of the authority invested in the police by the Yogi Aditynanath government in the name of improving the state’s law and order situation.
The Mauranipur police station in-charge Suneet Kumar Singh, who is heard on the clip tipping off gangster Lekhraj Singh Yadav about the encounter, has been suspended, The Indian Express has reported. A probe has also been ordered into an encounter in Jhansi, which reportedly took place after the audio clip went viral on social media.
According to The Indian Express report, 48 criminals have been killed in 1,755 encounters since Adityanath assumed office on March 20, 2017.
In the taped conversation, Singh purportedly tells Yadav, a gangster named in 57 cases, to “manage” Rajeev Singh Parichha, BJP MLA from Jhansi’s Babina constituency, and Sanjay Dubey, the BJP’s Jhansi head.
Singh has admitted that the voice in the tape is his and has been suspended indefinitely, The Indian Express has reported.
In the tape, Singh refers to himself as a “criminal” who has also been to jail and is backed by the “system”. “We have done so many crimes…also been to jail. We have the system with us. Everything gets sorted by Mata Rani’s grace,” Singh says.
The Indian Express has translated what Singh answers when Lekhraj questions the police action: “How many encounters took place in the last 14 years before the BJP government, did not take place… BSP came, SP came… now the system is going on… STF is also there… the entire team is involved,” Singh says. “Your number is with the surveillance cell… what should I say…your location is being traced… even if there are 10-20-50 people with you, it is not a big deal… people are working on it.”
BJP leaders Pariccha and Dubey have denied any links with the case. Parichha told The Indian Express that Singh was trying to extort money from the gangster knowing full well that “I don’t talk to criminals”.
Jhansi SP Vinod Kumar has said Suneet Singh is a discredited police officer. He had been expelled for a year in 2007 once. In 2011, an FIR on charges of unnatural offences was filed against him in Jalaun. He was acquitted in 2016.
Lekhraj recently had two FIRs filed against him by a corporator in Jhansi named Pradeep Gupta for which he was taken into custody. Police is also investigating Gupta’s role in Yadav’s encounter.
Singh is heard saying on the tape that he has killed many and that he has been a criminal for a long time. “Don’t how many I have killed,” he says.
He is further heard saying (as translated into English by The Indian Express): “The encounter is for sure… now that you have aged, what’s there? It is all about the rule… you have lived a lot, now what’s there… sort it out… Whatever the issue is, see to it, manage it, resolve it, otherwise you will be fixed… I would also not be able to do much.”
