Rape-accused MJ Akbar Can’t Decide if He is ‘Chowkidar’ or Not

The BJP MP added, removed and then added again the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ to his Twitter screen name.

Accused by over twenty women journalists during India’s MeToo movement, Bharatiya Janata Party MP and former editor MJ Akbar added, removed and then added again the prefix ‘Chowkidar’ to his Twitter screen name, all within a span of a couple of days.

Following the lead of BJP leaders, Akbar had added ‘Chowkidar’ to his name on his social media account on Saturday . But after facing severe backlash, with people on social media  reminding him of the long list of accusations of sexual crimes against him, the former union minister decided to delete it on Monday morning.

On Monday morning, it appeared that Akbar had finally been shamed into removing the tag.

However, the BJP leader presumably decided that he was a ‘Chowkidar’ shortly after, since the tag is now back on his Twitter profile.

Akbar has been accused of sexual harassment committed over several years, by over 20 women. Pallavi Gogoi, currently an editor at National Public Radio (NPR) in the United States, has alleged that Akbar had sexually assaulted her when she was working as his junior at The Asian Age.
