Modi Govt Succeeded in Crushing Another Institution: Arun Shourie on RBI Governor Urjit Patel’s Resignation
Shourie said that the Modi govt turned the RBI into another CBI with its interference.
Former Union Minister, veteran journalist and economist Arun Shourie expressed his disapproval of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Urjit Patel’s resignation. Speaking to the media, Shourie commented on the BJP government’s interference into constitutional bodies and said, “… fear ‘R’ in RBI has changed changed into a ‘C’ to make another CBI.”
He also said that Urjit Patel’s departure is “yet another signal that Govt has succeeded in crushing another institution”.

Urjit Patel, the 24th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has announced his resignation on Monday, December 10. He had succeeded Raghuram Rajan as the RBI governor in September 2016. Patel has cited “personal reasons” behind his resignation. In his resignation letter, while he has thanked RBI staff, his colleagues and members of the bank’s central board, there is no mention of members of the Narendra Modi-led government.
