Modi Govt Trying To Brand Activists, Students As ‘Maoists’: Jadavpur University Students

The Pune Police have labelled them as “top urban Maoist operatives”.

The members of Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) and some students of Jadavpur University (JU) on Monday protested in Kolkata against “fascist rule” and “divisive politics” of the BJP-led (Bharatiya Janata Party-led) Union government. They claimed the government is trying to frame students and activists as “Maoist”.

Abhishek Mukherjee, Convenor of an ultra-left students’ organisation ‘Radical’ said, “There is a growing discontent all over the country against the fascist regime of Modi-(Amit) Shah Sarkar against the communal hatred, caste atrocities and the divisive politics which they are playing.”

Mukherjee accused the “Sarkar” of indulging in a false propaganda by circulating a letter trying to frame them (the activists) as close aides of Maoists. The letter was recovered from the house of one of the five persons arrested.

The protesters said the letter has names of three Jadavpur University students and an alumnus. Trashing the letter seized by Pune police as “fabricated”, they said it is only a “conspiracy” to brand activists and students as Maoists.

According to a report in The Indian Express, the protesters said the central and state agencies are “framing people in cases to curb their voices.” They were referring to the arrest of advocate Surendra Gadling, Dalit writer and activist Sudhir Dhawale, professor Soma Sen, Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson and a former Prime Minister’s Rural Development (PMRD) Fellow Mahesh Raut for Bhima-Koregaon violence.
