Bizarre, Relentless Politicisation: Modi Says Every Indian Proud That Abhinandan Is From Tamil Nadu

It can be safely said that Indians don’t care about the state which the wing commander belongs to.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has not spoken a word about the capture of Indian Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman by Pakistan, finally uttered the pilot’s name, however, while addressing a rally in Tamil Nadu on Friday, March 1.

Modi, who is addressing the rally in his official capacity as the Prime Minister, delivered a blatant political speech in which he attacked the Opposition and previous governments, while lauding the “achievements” of his own government. He also did not refrain from referring to his own party’s 2014 electoral victory in the speech. Snippets of his speech were posted by the PMO Twitter handle as well as the BJP handle.

In this same breath, using Varthaman’s Tamil identity, the Prime Minister said, “It makes every Indian proud that the brave Wing Commander Abhinandan hails from Tamil Nadu.”

It can be safely said that Indians don’t care about the state which the wing commander belongs to.

Notably,  less than 24 hours after Varthaman’s capture, the Prime Minister chose to address a video conference with BJP booth workers.

This is Modi’s first visit to the state after the announcement of the AIAMK-BJP alliance for upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The blatant politicisation of the valour of the IAF pilot who was captured by Pakistan while defending the Indian skies, whose name was not even mentioned by the PM before this day, is not surprising considering Karnataka BJP chief BS Yeddyurappa’s remark on Wednesday when he said that the IAF air strikes will help BJP win 22 seats.

It is important to note that Abhinandan is still in Pakistan, and the prime minister has started to score political points, not waiting for the pilot’s safe return.

The Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had announced on Thursday that Abhinandan would be released as a gesture of peace.
