Khan was accused by a mob of Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) workers of not taking action against the murderers of a local BJP leader who was shot dead in Ranchi on June 18.
The mob had allegedly made verbally abusive remarks, which were communal in nature, against police officer Abid Khan.
Khan told The Hindu, “It was an off-the-cuff reaction as someone among the crowd had made some unwarranted personal remark against me… the murder had happened early in the morning and they came to the police station with the body and started accusing me of not taking any action.”
He added, “My senior was sitting inside the police station and those in the mob were not willing to listen… though an FIR was lodged against unknown persons. It takes time to take action in such cases.”
