‘Need Uptight Men Who Don’t Crouch Before a Dictatorial PM’: Prasar Bharati Ex-CEO Slams Election Commission Over NaMo TV
Jawhar Sircar said that the EC is “spineless”.
The former chief executive officer of Prasar Bharati Jawhar Sircar has slammed the Election Commission of India (EC) for dragging its feet on deciding the legality of NaMo TV — an entire channel dedicated to the Prime Minister — at the time of the 2019 general elections.
Tweeting a Frontline article about NaMo TV, Sircar pointed out that the whole country’s eyes are on the EC. He said we are shying away and are in denial about the EC’s cowardly present state.
NaMo TV: Country is watching the Election Commission” Why are we shying in recognising that this Election Commission is just too spineless— we don’t need Seshans all the time, all we need uptight men who don’t crouch before a dictatorial PM ! https://t.co/Taqiws0mF6

Referring to former election commissioner Tirunellai Narayana Iyer Seshan, Sircar said we don’t need a strong chief like him all the time, but we do need strong men who don’t bow before a “dictatorial PM”.
Earlier the EC sought details of NaMo TV from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry only after the issue of the alleged violation of the model code of conduct was flagged by the media and the Opposition.
Tata Sky’s official twitter account had confirmed NaMo TV “is a Hindi news service which provides the latest breaking news on national politics.”

Curiously, on the Information and Broadcasting Ministry website, Namo TV does not show up on the list of 901 Private Permitted Satellite TV Channels, Frontline reported.
