‘Lowered The Dignity of The Office of PM’: Over 120 DU Teachers Condemn Modi’s Barb Against Rajiv Gandhi
"History records the deeds of the good and the noble but rarely does it pay attention to the carping of lesser individuals."
Teachers of the Delhi University have written a statement condemning Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remark that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated by the LTTE, died “bhrashtachari no.1”. PM Modi had directed the remark at Congress president Rahul Gandhi.
The DU teachers’ statement reads, “History records the deeds of the good and the noble but rarely does it pay attention to the carping of lesser individuals. The achievements of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi are known to all.”
It points out that when Indian soldiers had successfully pushed away infiltrators at Kargil with the help of the Bofors gun, they had shouted praises for Rajiv Gandhi. IT revolution, convenient train travel (due to computerised rail reservation) and advancements in the telecom sector are listed as some of Rajiv Gandhi’s popular achievements.
The statement then says that PM Modi has “lowered the dignity of the office of the Prime Minister by making derogatory and untrue remarks about the late Rajivji who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation. No former Prime Minsiter has stopped to this level through such actions as has Shri Narendra Modi ji.”
Sadhavi Khosla shared the letter signed by Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) President Aditya Narayan Mishra. Khosla wrote that the statement is signed by 200 other teachers.
