The Basic Education Department has started removing the word ‘Islamia’ prefixed to the names of some government primary schools in the Ballia district here, the officials said today. The exercise has been launched here days after a similar step was initiated in another eastern UP district of Deoria. Basic Shiksha Adhikari Santosh Rai said, “The orders have been issued to six such Islamia primary schools in Siar block (of the district) to remove the word Islamia, prefixed to their names. The schools which were till now observing holiday on Friday instead of Sunday, have also been told to ensure that the school remains closed on Sundays.” Read more here.

A 35-year-old woman here was allegedly held captive by her husband and in-laws for almost a week, beaten up and attacked with acid and hot oil, police said today. The woman, Kausar, said she married Kasim almost a year ago. In her complaint, she said that she was held hostage on July 9 and beaten up. Her neck was burnt using hot oil, fingers and toes were also attacked with acid. She was kept hungry and thirsty. After this, she was thrown out of the house on July 17.” Read more here.

The Supreme Court today slammed the Uttar Pradesh government for filing a draft report of the vision document on protection and preservation of the Taj Mahal and asked whether the apex court was supposed to vet it. A bench comprising justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta came down heavily on the Uttar Pradesh government and questioned the state’s concern in the matter. “Why have you given a draft plan? Are we supposed to vet it for you? Is it our job to vet it,” the bench asked the counsel appearing for the Uttar Pradesh government. Read more here.

A blind lawyer today moved the Supreme Court seeking to make judiciary disabled-friendly, especially for visually impaired people, saying the creation of accessible infrastructure and support system for lawyers with disabilities was imperative to create a level playing field. A bench of justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan while agreeing to hear the matter issued a notice to the Registrar General of all the high courts and the Secretary-General of the apex court in an interlocutory application filed by lawyer Rahul Bajaj. A 17-year-old girl was allegedly abducted and raped by two youths in a village in Shamli district, police said today. The accused, identified as Sachin and Shokat, both neighbours of the minor girl, allegedly abducted her in Balwa village under the Kotwali police station area yesterday, Circle Officer Ashok Kumar said. Citing a complaint filed by the victim’s father, the official said the accused took the minor to a forested area and raped her, and added that they beat her up when she tried to fight back.
