‘Paani Aaya’: People Abandon Maharashtra BJP Chief’s Rally in Jalna Upon Call of Water Supply Being Back
BJP leaders reportedly tried to play down the incident and refused to acknowledge that there is a severe drought in the region.
The audience at Maharashtra BJP president MP Raosaheb Danve’s rally on Friday abandoned their seats when the call for “paani aaya” (water supply is back) was sounded at the drought hit Jalna Lok Sabha constituency.
Times of India reported that Danve was present at the inauguration of his campaign office in Ram Nagar area of Mukundwadi in Jalna, Maharashtra.
Jalna is among the worst drought affected region in Maharashtra. Danve will be facing off against Congress candidate Vilas Autade at the Jalna constituency, in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
A source told TOI that Danve was addressing a group of his constituents, when a boy announced “paani aaya”. At the loud proclamation, people quickly abandoned the meeting and rushed to fill water.
BJP leaders reportedly tried to play down the incident and refused to acknowledge that there is a severe drought crisis in the region. BJP termed Friday’s incident as trivial and said only few people left the venue, the report said, adding that some party workers reportedly admitted there was a major water crisis in the city but refused to go on record.
There have been several protests in Jalna against the erratic water supply. Earlier this week, residents reportedly staged a rasta roko and burnt tyres, TOI reported.
