Instead of Listening to Woes of Anganwadi Workers, BJP Govt Lathi-charged Them: Priyanka Gandhi

"The struggles of my sisters are my struggles," she added.

Congress General-Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday, March 24 met Anganwadi workers in Uttar Pradesh.

On Twitter, she wrote: “The Anganwadi helpers and workers want the status of government employees. But instead of listening to their woes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government lathi-charged them.”

“The struggles of my sisters are my struggles,” she added.

On the plight of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers, Priyanka Gandhi tweeted, “The ASHA workers who take care of pregnant women for nine months are paid only Rs 600. The BJP government has done nothing to increase their wages. They want answers, not jumlas.”

Gandhi, in her tweet, referred to the October-2017 incident when Lucknow Police lathi-charged around 3,500 Anganwadi workers sitting on a protest. Twelve Anganwadi workers, two photojournalists and two women constables had sustained injuries. They were demanding regularisation of around 5,000 Anganwadi workers, wage hike to bring them at par with state government employees, among other things. The government has still not fulfilled their demands.

Last month, Anganwadi workers united from different states such as Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Himachal Pradesh to protest in Delhi. The protesting workers, per a NewsClick report, chanted slogans against the unfair treatment meted to the workers and the government’s plan to privatise the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) services. The Narendra Modi-led BJP government, in October 2018, had promised the workers increased minimum wages on the occasion of Diwali. Nothing, however, was implemented on the ground.
