As per an NDTV report, Gandhi was on a three-day trip, covering Amethi and Rae Bareli before reaching Ayodhya. On Friday Gandhi interacted with students of Sunbeam Public School in Ayodhya. A Congress leader told news agency IANS that a student questioned Priyanka Gandhi’s dreams about a future India, adding, “Priyanka Gandhi said she has an emotional dream for India. She wants to see an India where no one’s religion is questioned.”
Gandhi said she also wants to see an India where “women are equal to men and are not treated the way they are treated today”.
Referring to Indira Gandhi’s decision in 1972 to do away with the privileges given to Maharajas, Priyanka Gandhi said that this would not have happened if the Gandhi family viewed itself as royalty.
Reacting to the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) critical stance on the Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY) — the Congress’s proposed basic minimum income plan — she said, “The BJP should answer where the government got the money to waive off debts of the business community.”
She also called the BJP’s 2014 promise of giving Rs 15 lakh to every citizen only “rhetoric”. She reminded people that it was the Congress that had introduced people-friendly schemes such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) which BJP had opposed at the time.
Priyanka Gandhi also provided first-aid to a party worker who injured his hand after being pushed by a Special Protection Group (SPG) officer while attempting to meet the Congress leader.
As per reports, Gandhi said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ignored his own Varanasi constituency and instead went on world tours. The Congress leader said that when she asked the people if Modiji came to their villages, they replied, “Not even once in the last five years as he remains busy in doing publicity”. Targeting the Prime Minister over his foreign trips, Priyanka Gandhi said: “He goes to foreign lands and hugs the people there. But he does not hug the poor in India.”
Referencing Prime Minister’s Lahore visit in 2015 she told reporters, “Pakistan mein biryani khane ke liye to woh gaye thhe naa (He has time to visit Pakistan to have biryani).” Comparing her party’s politics with that of the BJP, Priyanka Gandhi said: “Their politics is of lie and publicity. It won’t work anymore.”
As per reports, Priyanka Gandhi also offered prayers at Hanuman Garhi temple in Ayodhya. While she was inside the Hanuman temple, Congress and BJP supporters shouted slogans at each other outside, news agency PTI reported. “We used light force to disperse the mob,” a Faizabad city senior police officer Anil Singh Sisodia said.
