Are You Listening to Distressed Voices of Rural India, Mr PM? Priyanka Gandhi Slams Narendra Modi

"The PM visited America, Japan and China. He hugged world leaders but has not embraced his own people in his own constituency," she said.

Congress General-Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while campaigning in districts of Uttar Pradesh, shared a video of distressed farmers on her Twitter early morning on March 30. During her visit, Gandhi engaged with the villagers in a conversation. She asked the Prime Minister if the perturbing voices of the farmers were audible to him.

In the video, farmers complained about the problems they face because of stray animals. They lamented that at least one person from their families has to guard the fields day and night to protect the crops. “My daughters guard the fields during the day, and my sons and I, at night. We can never leave it on its own because of the terror of stray animals,” a farmer told her. There is a place for stray animals to be kept in, but there has been no work done by the government to catch them, he added.

Gandhi took to Twitter and asked the Prime Minister if the complaints of the farmers were audible to him. “Sun rahe hain Pradhan Mantri jee?” read her tweet.

Farmer Vijay Narayan speaking to BBC Hindi said that he faced the same problem and that it had massive ramifications on the farming community in Uttar Pradesh. Narayan, from Kadipur Novakuan, told BBC Hindi‘s Faisal Mohammed Ali that stray animals had been eating up crops ready to be reaped. “If animals eat up everything, what will we feed our children?” he asked, adding, “We are forced to be chowkidars at our fields.”

Earlier, Gandhi had also said that while the PM hugged leaders all over the world, he does not listen to people in his own constituency. Taking a potshot at the PM in a rally in Adilpur village in Faizabad, Gandhi said, “The PM visited America, Japan and China. He hugged the leaders of the world, but he has not embraced his own people in his own constituency. I asked if the PM visited any villages here, and I was surprised to hear people say that he hasn’t.”
