Priyanka Gandhi Speaks Up for Protesting ASHA, Anganwadi Workers & Shiksha Mitras

“BJP leaders are busy marketing T-shirts, I wish they had paid attention to those suffering,” she said.

Congress general-secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has launched a campaign on Twitter called #Sanchibaat to raise issues of overlooked workers’ groups in Uttar Pradesh. So far she has amplified problems experienced by ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and instructors (shiksha mitra).

On Monday morning Gandhi Vadra tweeted about meeting shiksha mitras in Lucknow.

She said, “The U.P. chief minister had announced their salary will be raised from Rs. 8,470 to Rs. 17,000. However, the instructors still receive Rs. 8,470. The government is busy amplifying their false promises while the voice of instructors is lost. “

Gandhi had earlier posted on Twitter, “The hard work of Uttar Pradesh’s shiksha mitras is insulted every day. Scores of sufferers committed suicide. Those who took to the streets to protest were beaten with lathis, National Security Act was registered against them.”

Directing a pointed barb at Prime Minister Modi she said, “BJP leaders are busy marketing T-shirts, I wish they had paid attention to those suffering,” she said.

She posted on Twitter, “The Anganwadi helpers and workers want the status of government employees. But instead of listening to their woes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government lathi-charged them.”

Showing solidarity with their struggles, the AICC in-charge of Uttar Pradesh East wrote, “The struggles of my sisters are my struggles as well.”

In another tweet on Sunday Priyanka Gandhi Vadra spoke up on the plight of Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers in Uttar Pradesh.

She tweeted, “The ASHA workers who take care of pregnant women for nine months are paid only Rs 600. The BJP government has done nothing to increase their wages. They want answers, not ‘jumlas’ (roadshows).”

The lathi-charging incident mentioned by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra refers to when 3,500 Anganwadi workers were beaten by Lucknow police in October 2017. Twelve Anganwadi workers, two photojournalists and two women constables had sustained injuries. They were demanding regularisation of around 5,000 Anganwadi workers, wage hike to bring them at par with state government employees, among other things. The government has still not fulfilled any of their demands.
