Academic Ram Puniyani Receives Threatening Calls, Receives Warning To Stop ‘Anti-Hindu’ Activities
Puniyani has filed a complaint with the Powai police station in Mumbai.
Professor Ram Puniyani, an academic, activist and civil society member, has been reportedly receiving threats from unknown persons. As per a report in Sabrang India, the former biomedical engineering professor from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay received threats on the phone at night of June 6.
Per the report, he received the first call around 8.30 PM. The phone call arrived on their landline and was received by Puniyani’s brother-in-law. The caller reportedly said that Puniyani was anti-Hindu and threatened him with dire consequences should he not stop his activism.
The second call arrived five minutes later — this time received by Puniyani. Per Sabrang India, the caller used a threatening tone and asked if he was speaking to the professor. When Puniyani declined to acknowledge, the caller hung up.
Following this episode, Puniyani registered an FIR with the Powai police station in Mumbai on June 7. He also met with the Joint Commissioner, Land and Order, Vinoy K Choubey, on the same day. Choubey has assured that the incident would be investigated seriously and measures would be taken to ensure Puniyani’s safety and instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, MIDC, Dr Sangramsingh Nishandar to look into the complaint.
Speaking to Sabrang India, Puniyani said, “This is extremely concerning and disturbing. My family is worried about my safety. I hope the authorities take this seriously. This is not the first time that I have faced such intimidation.”
In light of the assassinations of rationalists, activists and journalists like Narendra Dabholkar, MM Kalburgi, Govid Pansare and Gauri Lankesh, the threats made to Puniyani cannot be taken lightly.
Several civil society members, activists and groups like All India Secular Forum, Anhad, Bharat Bachao Andolan, PUCL and many more have condemned these threats.
Shabnam Hashmi of Anhad, wrote: “We are deeply concerned about Ram Puniyani’s security and demand immediate action against the culprits whose phone details have been submitted to the police.”
