Rape Accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal Says Prison Was Like A ’21-day Retreat’

He also said that his bail was "something like a miracle."

Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, after being granted bail on October 15, has boasted about the grand welcome he received when he came out of prison. He said in a letter dated October 19, addressing the bishops and monsignors of the Catholic Church in India, “almost thousand people were waiting outside, with rosaries and saying their prayers to welcome me.”

He also described the time he spent inside the prison as a “21-day retreat since most of the time was spent in prayers, reading of the word of God, meditation and personal reflection… It was a time of great blessing and graces,” reported The Indian Express.

He went on to say that it was “clear” that police arrested him “due to pressure from the media” and the situation “created by the Sisters and their supporters”,

“After two days of interrogation before the police team at Trippunithara (Kerala), it became clear that police had no option but to arrest me due to pressure from the media and the scenario created by the sisters and their supporters at Vanchi Square in front of the High Court at Kochi,” he further said in the letter meant to “update” other bishops.

The Bishop of Jalandhar has been accused of raping a 44-year-old nun 13 times between 2014 and 2016. The woman filed a complaint with the police in June this year, after alleging that the church authorities did not act on her complaint.
