Time Has Come For CBI to be Insulated From Political Executive: Former CJI RM Lodha

He added, “As long as the political executive continues to have control, whoever is in power, these types of things will occur.”

Former Chief Justice of India (CJI) RM Lodha reportedly argued for the independence of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday, January 12 in light of the removal of Alok Verma by a panel led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to ANI, Lodha said, “The premier investigating agency has to be given independence. Time has come for it to be insulated from political executive. As long as the political executive continues to have control, whoever is in power, these types of things will occur.”

Earlier, on Friday, January 11, speaking to Indian Express, Lodha had said that there were various ways through which the CBI could become the “premier investigative agency”, despite political interference. “There are modes and methods by which this can be done. Successive governments, too, will try and influence, and use CBI for their ends. But I think this matter is sub-judice. It came up during the coal scam issue, and it must be followed through— by the courts or by some other method— to ensure the CBI’s independence,” he had said.

Lodha also referred to the CBI as the “caged parrot” which “cannot truly fly in the free sky till it is free”.
