Irresponsible Statements By Modi Will Damage India’s Credibility Globally: Sitaram Yechury

“One of our strategic strengths has been our credible stance about being a responsible nuclear power.”

Castigating Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent remark about India’s nuclear capabilities, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Sunday said that India’s credibility as a responsible nuclear power would be damaged by such statements.   

“One of our strategic strengths has been our credible stance about being a responsible nuclear power, which is why we are not treated at par with Pakistan,” he said, adding that “Such irresponsible statements by Modi will damage our credibility globally, and weaken our long-standing strategic advantage,”

Following the Pokhran-II test in 1998, India had adopted the ‘No first-use’ policy as it’s nuclear doctrine, i.e., nuclear weapons would be used only in retaliation of a nuclear attack. With this, India had emerged on the world stage as a responsible nuclear power.

However, displaying no concern about the millions of lives at stake and the threat of mutually assured destruction, PM Modi said at an election rally in Rajasthan’s Barmar, that India’s nuclear weapons were “not meant for Diwali.” The remark drew stiff condemnation from civil society.
