Surat: Eight Policemen Arrested For Thrashing Suspects Mercilessly, Escape Police Custody

Surat: Eight policemen, including a police inspector, were arrested here Saturday for allegedly beating up three suspects, leaving one of them with a brain injury.
While the accused cops were being granted bail after arrest at Khatodara police station in the city, they fled, and efforts were on to nab them, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) P L Chaudhari said.
The accused detained three men Friday on suspicion of being involved in a burglary and brought them to Khatodara police station.
The suspects were beaten up mercilessly, leaving one of them with a severe brain injury, Chaudhari said.
A case was registered against the eight policemen under IPC sections 330 (voluntarily causing hurt to extract confession), 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons) and under the Gujarat Police Act.
When the process of granting them bail after arrest was underway, the accused policemen escaped from police custody, the ACP said.
A fresh case under IPC section 224 (resisting lawful apprehension) was lodged and a manhunt was launched to nab them, he added.
The accused included inspector M B Khileri of Khatodara police station and six `detection staff’ plain- clothes policemen, identified as Hareshbhai, Kanaksinh, Pareshbhai, Ashish, Kalpeshbhai and Dilubhai. The name of a seventh accused, a sub-inspector, was not disclosed.
Of the victims of police beating, two sustained minor injuries and were placed under arrest for alleged burglary.
Omprakash Pandey, who sustained a brain injury and was critical, was shifted to a private hospital.
