Siliguri: TMC Youth Wing Leader Allegedly Raped Minor; Victim Dies of Burn Injuries
CPI(M) MLA Asok Bhattacharya wrote to CM Mamata Banerjee to intervene, alleging that the police are not taking the matter seriously.
CPI(M) Siliguri MLA Asok Bhattacharya on Tuesday, March 26 wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asking her to take note of the death of a 16-year-old girl in a private hospital in the town.
The minor had severe burn injuries when she was brought to the hospital. Earlier this month, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth wing leader was reportedly arrested for raping her.
In his letter, Bhattacharya wrote that the police are not taking the matter seriously. Further, he underlined that the women of the state are suffering and this incident is an example. The victim was staying as a tenant in the TMC Youth Wing leader Nabin Das alias Bappa’s residence along with her parents in Naxalbari.
Bhattacharya wrote, “The family (of the victim) is very poor. Nabin Das alias Bappa repeatedly raped her and took her to different places where others exploited her.”
The CPI(M) leader pointed out that the police have not arrested other offenders in this case. “The local residents want a detailed inquiry and strict punishment for all the culprits. No illegal activity is possible without the support of police officials and ruling party leaders in the state,” he wrote, adding, “I hope you (Mamata Banerjee) will intervene in this matter both administratively and politically.”
