CPI(M) Alleges Booth Capturing in Tripura, Demands Re-polling

"The BJP govts — both in the Centre and in the state — have collaborated to ensure the absence of central forces..," said Sitaram Yechury.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] in a press conference on Thursday alleged that booth capturing took place in the two Lok Sabha constituencies in Tripura where voting was held in the first phase of the elections.

Before the elections were announced, Sitaram Yechury said a delegation of the party had given the details of sensitive booths in both Lok Sabha constituencies in Tripura to ensure all necessary measures are taken “in order to ensure that democracy is not subverted.”

The EC had assured the party that several measures were taken to sensitise the voters that they can safely come out and vote, he told the press.

The CPI(M) general secretary added that despite the assurances, no central forces were seen anywhere in the two constituencies, which is a serious matter.

“The BJP governments — both in the Centre and in the State — have collaborated to ensure the absence of central forces so that the confidence to voters is not given and they are subject to intimidation,” he alleged.

“There are large scale reports that our polling agents, who had entered the booths, taken their positions after the due formalities, they were driven out of the booths”, he said, adding that many agents were not allowed to enter the booths.

Yechury told reporters that voters “who were standing in line, waiting to vote, whoever suspected to be CPI(M) and Left-front supporters, they were forcibly asked to leave from there. And under threat and intimidation, they were not allowed to cast their vote.”

He added that as per the information available till 3.30 pm, everyone at the polling booths were driven out, and the booths were locked from the inside.

The left party leader further said that CPI(M) representatives had submitted a memorandum to the EC. The party has demanded re-polling in a number of booths “in the interest of democracy”.

Polling in Agartala and Tripura east constituencies was held in the first-phase of the 2019 election on Thursday.
