Uttar Pradesh: BJP MP Savitri Phule, Former SP Leader Rakesh Sachan Join Congress
Phule had accused the BJP of ignoring Dalits and the backwards.
Former Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Rakesh Sachan and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Savitri Phule joined the Congress party on Saturday, March 2, in the presence of Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi and Jyotiraditya Scindia in Delhi.
Phule had reportedly resigned from the BJP in December 2018, accusing the saffron party of ignoring the rights of Dalits and those who are backwards. She represents the Bahraich constituency. A social worker by profession, Phule was also a member of the Parliamentary Committee on empowerment of women, since 2016.
“This government is trying to divide the society. My demands are constantly being ignored for being a Dalit. Therefore I resign from the primary membership of the BJP. This government is trying to muzzle the Constitution as part of a conspiracy. The reservation meant for the Dalits and backwards is also in danger,” Phule told media persons last December, slamming the Modi government.
Sachan previously represented the Fatehpur constituency.
