Uttar Pradesh: Man Runs Over Dalit Family Protesting Sexual Harassment, Two Women Dead
Two other sustained serious injuries.
Lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh touched a new peak in Bulandshahr’s Chandpur village, where a Dalit family paid a heavy price for standing up to sexual harassment and misbehaviour. According to a report by Alok Pandey and Kamal Khan in NDTV, late on Monday night, June 24, two elderly Dalit women died on the spot and two others from the family were gravely injured when they were run over by a car.
As per the report, the accused — the hit-and-run was caught on CCTV footage — is a 30-year-old upper caste man who had tried to molest a 22-year-old woman from the family that was hit. While the police had initially registered this as an accident, they now say that they are investigating the family’s claim over the incidents of molestation and the hit-and-run being connected.
“We were initially told that it was a truck accident. We filed a case. But now the family has given a written complaint that a molestation attempt led to the incident. We have included that in the FIR (First Information Report) and are trying to arrest the accused,” senior police officer Atul Shrivastava told NDTV.
According to a report in Dainik Jagaran, the family was returning from a wedding on Monday night. When they arrived home, they allegedly saw a drunk man urinating outside their home. When they protested, the man misbehaved with them and tried to molest a woman in the family. As the matter began to escalate, the man allegedly ran away, but was back a few minutes later with his friends, when the hit-and-run took place.
In a video recorded by a resident, the 22-year-old woman alleged how the accused, belonging to a neighbouring village, had misbehaved with her. She also alleged that the man had threatened her just minutes before he allegedly ran over her family members with his car.
