Uttar Pradesh Govt Schools’ Environment Isn’t Good, My Kids Study in a Convent School: BJP Leader Swati Singh

Singh struggled to give a logical explanation to the audience at a recent event.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Swati Singh was left red-faced at a recent event in New Delhi and ended up criticising government schools in Uttar Pradesh. Singh, who told the audience that she is proud to have passed out from a government school, was left red-faced when they asked if her children studied in government schools or private schools.

Mein sarkari school mein padhi hun. Aur aaj mujhe bahut khushi ho rahi hai ki mere mata pita ne mujhe sarkari school mein padhaya. Kamse kam yaha bolna layak to hui mai. (I have studied in a government school. And today I feel pleased that my parents have sent me to a government school. At least I’m capable enough to speak at this stage today),” Singh said at an event organised by BBC Hindi at Constitution Club of India on February 8.

Following the BJP leader’s remarks, the host asked, “Darshakon mein se ek sawal aya hai ki apke bachche kahan padhte hain. (The audience wants to know where do your children study?)” MP Savitribai Phule, who has recently quit the saffron party added, “Wahi main poochhna chaahti hun. (I want to ask the same question).”

Singh then struggled to explain why her children study in private schools. She said that the environment in government schools in Uttar Pradesh is not very good. She also added that teachers in government schools often remain absent, as the audience members burst out laughing.

Singh said, “Bahut achhi baat hai. Mere bachha private school mein pad raha hai, convent mein pad raha hai. Uska reason bhi sun lijiye. Bahut achhi baat hai, aap hooting kariye. (Verry good. My children study in a private school, in a convent school. You should know the reason behind it too. Very good, you people keep hooting).”

She added: “Uska reason sun lijiya. Uska reason ye hai ki maine bola ki pehle kuch aur hi tantra tha, pehle teachers aate nahi the. Ab bachcha jis school mein pad raha hai, mujhe wo kahna mein koi gurez nahi hai, zara sa bhi hesitation nahi hai ki mere bachche convent mein padh rahe hai. (Listen to the reason. The reason is that the situation was different, the teachers used not to visit schools. Now, I don’t hesitate to say that my kids study in a convent school).”

As Singh continued to explain, the audience wasn’t convinced — her statements didn’t make any sense. She jumped from one point to the other and even suggested that the environment in government schools wasn’t excellent. The BJP leader struggled to give a logical conclusion to her elaborate explanation.

She said, “Aur jis school se shuru se mere bachcha padh raha hai, padhe, aur ab bade ho gaye hai… main nahi chahti hu ki is time unka friend circle aisa ho ya jis tarike ka mahol mein wo rahe, kyunki jis school mein aap rahte hain, usme agar aap ko… kyunki pehle to sarkari schools mein teacher jaate hi nahi the. Ye toh abhi do sal mein hua hai Uttar Pradesh mein ki sarkari schools mein teachers jaane lage varna kya mahaul tha kya stithi thi wo agar aap aaj bhi jayenge… aaj hum log khud jaate hai, hamare yahan ye kaha gaya hai ki sabhi vidhayak, sabhi Bharatiya Janata Party ke jo karyakarta hai, wo ek ek school mein visit karenge, god lange wahan ke bachhon ko… kya kar sakte hai. (And the school in which my kids are studying, I don’t want their friend circle should be like that or the environment in which they stay… Because previuosly even teachers used to remain absent from government schools. This scenario has changed in the last two years in Uttar Pradesh. Teachers have started visiting government schools. Otherwise previously the situation… even today if you visit… Now I visit government schools. BJP legislators and workers have been instructed to visit government schools and adopt the children studying there.”
