Uttar Pradesh: Narendra Modi Makes Factual Error About Modern Coach Factory, Gets Called Out on Twitter

Modi said the factory was not allowed to work at ‘its full capacity’ despite being built in 2007, even though the factory was inaugurated only in 2012.

Columnist and political commentator Rupa Subramanya laid bare arguments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech at the Modern Coach Factory in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli on Sunday, December 16.

In his speech, Modi attacked former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who represents the constituency in Lok Sabha and who had laid the foundation stone of the coach factory in 2007. ANI reported he said, “This factory was sanctioned in 2007 and was built in 2010. For 4 years parts of the coach from Kapurthala were assembled and painted here. The factory that was supposed to make new coaches was never allowed to work at its full capacity.”

In a tweet, Subramanya, however, highlighted the glaring error in Modi’s statement. “Full story: Sonia Gandhi laid foundation stone Feb 2007. Land acquired April 2007. New CM Mayawati cancels land deed halting the project. Mayawati then reverses her decision. Allahabad HC allows project. Jan 2009 construction begins. Factory inaugurated by Sonia Gandhi Nov 2012,” said Subramanya.

As it stands, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government commissioned the factory during its first term at the Centre. However, after the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won the UP assembly elections in 2007 and formed its government in 2008, the land deed for the factory was cancelled by then Chief Minister Mayawati. Following intervention from the Allahabad High Court, the project was eventually flagged off in 2009, before being completed in 2012.

Although the initial cost of the project was Rs 1685 crores, following these delays, a total of Rs 2500 crores came to be sanctioned towards its completion.
